The Gunpowder Magazine

The old gunpowder magazine of the army camp in Pyli, Farsala, dating to the second half of the 18th century, was used from World War II until 1984 as a prison. It is an elongated, stone-built structure consisting of three barrel-vaulted halls—two aligned lengthwise and one transverse. It is located on Ioustinianou Street, in the courtyard of the 5th High School-Lyceum, and today houses the city’s Museum of National Resistance.

The Museum of National Resistance

The preserved building of the old gunpowder magazine now houses the Museum of National Resistance. The museum’s permanent exhibition, titled “1941 – 1944: Thessaly Resists,” covers the period of the Greco-Italian War, the Occupation, and the National Resistance, and presents how the people of Thessaly organized themselves in order to liberate their homeland from the Axis forces. Its collections include maps, resistance newspapers, photographic material, typewriters used by ELAS and EPON, as well as the uniforms of G. Sarafis.
